Teddy Bear Hospital

The Teddy Bear Hospital is a project for kindergartens, children’s hospitals and primary classes, aimed at reducing children’s fear of doctors and introducing them to a little first aid — through play.

Before the hospital opens its doors, we talk with the children about their experiences of going to the doctor and their fears about doctors; only then do we set about chasing those fears away, gently and playfully.

Each child invents a problem for their toy, which has to be treated by a (student) doctor holding surgery at the Teddy Bear Hospital. In a white coat, the doctor listens to the toy animal’s lungs and heart with a stethoscope, dresses wounds, writes prescriptions and, where needed, gives injections or sends the patient for further investigation. The children also get to try simple first aid on each other, such as bandaging a wound.
