The Estonian Medical Students’ Association or EstMSA for short, is an organization that connects the medical students of Estonia. As there is only one medical faculty in Estonia, which is situated in Tartu, this city is the centre of operation for our organization, which was founded between the years 1989 and 1991.
One of the main goals for EstMSA is to contribute to an ever evolving and continually more professional generation of new doctors. We organize a lot of events for our members growth and development, to become better caretakers for their patients and Estonian society. EstMSA also actively takes part in discussions about the future of medicine both on the local and national level. We try as much as possible to be a part of the development of healthcare systems.
Another important goal is the health of the population of our country. We organize numerous events to raise awareness about the physical and mental aspects of health and to stress how important it is to take responsibility for one’s health. We have been providing sexual education classes for secondary school children, organizing mental health awareness and first-aid seminars in schools, and teddy-bear hospitals for smaller children, in which they get to know about basic medical aid and learn not to be afraid of medical personnel. In our list of focus groups we have included the elderly as well, by educating them on how to stay healthy and mobile in their age. EstMSA is also working with family-schools, where our members provide information to young parents about vaccination and try to break misconceptions related to vaccines in general.
EstMSA is a national member organization of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations since 1993. EstMSAs structure is derived from that of IFMSA but in addition to standing committees on public health (SCOPH), reproductive health (SCORA), human rights and peace (SCORP), medical education (SCOME) and professional exchange (SCOPH), we have a modified research exchange group (SCORE) which means that in addition to facilitating exchanges, they organise events about science in medicine. We also have three of our very own standing committees: sports working group, sustainability working group and Curare – our magazine.
Our vision is that one day the healthiest and happiest people on Earth live in Estonia!
